staying awake to pray!

I recall reading of the Celtic saint who would stand in the bitterly cold waters of the North Sea as an aid to keeping awake to pray, and of the otters who would playfully snuggle around his feet to keep them warm. Those must have been the days!

Here we have to contend with tropical humidity and no sooner does one think of praying, or of reading some theological book, than you find yourself asleep! Yesterday we were at the top of Gun Hill, in the shade of mahogany trees, and with quite a strong breeze. It was no use staying in an air-conditioned car; we had to get out, sit on camping chairs and “Lo, we were able to pray and stay awake!” And no cold feet.

Looking forward to hearing the results of the deliberations at Seabeck.
